You get to choose between four Tamers from Digimon Data Squad (Marcus, Thomas, Yoshimo, Keenan) and can start with your very own partner Digimon (Agumon, Gaomon, Lalamon, Falcomon). There are many more Digimon to collect as well.
You will need to select a character and then a digimon for yourself in character creation section of the game. Unfortunately there is not any character customization tool on the game. You earn experience points everytime a party member defeats a digimon. You can party with up to 3 more people. Also make sure you defeat digimon that are 3-40 levels higher than you, as you will get more exp.Depending on your Digimon's type you should choose which digimon's to defeat in order to level up. Remember Data is strong against Vaccine, Vaccine is strong against Virus and Virus is strong against Data.
Battling is done in a turn based style. The player does not directly fight in battle. Instead, a Digimon chosen by the player as his or her "main" Digimon fights in their stead. Each Digimon has a time bar that goes up over the course of the battle. When the time bar fills, the Tamer may take action with that Digimon, such as attacking, fleeing, or using items to recover health.In battle, the player is only directly able to use card items to temporarily alter their Digimon's stats, induce digivolution, or switch in other Digimon they own. A tamer can only use 3 cards at a time, and are limited to a certain number of card uses per battle. Cards are bought in-game or traded with other players.
Players select a partner Digimon and grow and evolve it by battling enemy Digimon. Like other monster collection games, another primary goal is to collect as many other Digimons ,known as Mecernary Digimons as possible. As players and their Digimon level up, the Digimons acquire new abilities and forms. Players can also participate in player-formed groups known as guilds where kids with good leadership skills can shine.
